Building Blocks of Medicare
Medicare health coverage has five parts that you need to know about.
- Part A – inpatient hospital and facility benefits;
- Part B – physician and outpatient benefits;
- Part C/Medicare Advantage – a combination of Part A, Part B, and sometimes Part D;
- Part D – prescription drug coverage;
- Medicare Supplements – to fill in the gaps of Parts A and B.
The Two Routes Taken
Original Medicare
Part A - covers hospital stays;
Part B - covers doctor and outpatient visits.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Part C combines Part A (hospital) and Part B(doctor).
Medicare Supplement with Standalone Part D
This route covers some of the cost not covered by Original Medicare Parts A and B. You would add a standalone drug plan if you do not have other creditable coverage.
Prescription Drugs (Part D)
Covers prescription drugs. Most plans include this unless you have other creditable coverage.
